These abbreviated, printer-friendly guides were written by the Learning Management System (LMS) Team to complement the Sakai Glossary.

Faculty Quick Start Guide
Navigate the Sakai System and set up your Course Site for the new semester.

Lessons: Create Pages and Subpages (new!)
The Lessons tool allows you to create structured units of learning containing multiple pages and subpages for arrangement and delivery of content organized by lesson. Each individual Lesson you create may be assigned a starting date, hiding the Lesson until it has been assigned to students.

Sign-Up Tool (new!)
Creation of the Sign-up tool was motivated by requests from faculty who wanted to replace the "sign up sheets on the door" with an online alternative. Sign-Up allows students to sign up for office hours, meetings, review sessions and other events in one convenient place. It offers a number of customizable options, such as recurring meetings, staggered timeslots, etc.

Gradebook (new!)
The Sakai Gradebook is a tool for instructors to calculate and store grade information for items completed within Sakai as well as items completed in class.

Assign a TA to a Course Section
This document will outline the proper way of adding a Teaching Assistant to a course section in Sakai. Teaching Assistants should be assigned the Teaching Assistant role within the course site. Assigning TAs as Instructors may be a FERPA violation. Adding a TA to a section they are not working with may also be a FERPA violation. Consult with your department if you have any questions regarding appropriate access.

Wrong Roster in Course Site (Add or Remove Roster in existing Course Site)
Uses: A) If you already created your course, but wish to add more rosters into a single course site. B) Remove a roster you added by accident. Note: Faculty can NOT add and remove individual students from the roster. This data is automated by the Student Information System maintained by the Office of the Registrar.

Copy Between Course Sites (Import / Export between courses)
The best time to reuse materials from one site to another is during the Worksite Setup process (See the Faculty Quick Start Guide). However, you may find a need to reuse materials after your new course site is finished. This document will cover the various ways you can Import and Export (copy) Sakai items between course sites.

Extended Time on an Exam (Academic Accommodation)
This document will cover extended time on an assessment for a specific person or group, most commonly used for academic accommodations. Additionally, this method can be used to provide an alternative due date for a specific person or group. Use the Groups tool to create a group of one or more students, then make a duplicate copy of your assessment released only to those assigned to the Group and adjust date and time restrictions.

Popular Topics

Secure / Non Secure (Blocked) Content and Videos
Each of the most popular Browsers (Firefox, IE, Chrome) displays content differently. Click the link above to learn how to display content in Sakai which may have been blocked by your browser.

Missing a Course? ("More Sites" drawer)
Sakai displays the most recent courses you have visited. If you are expecting to see a course in your top menu bar, click the More Sites tab to see courses there isn’t room to display on your screen. If you are a student, check with your instructor that they have created a course site.

Hide Old Course Sites (Preferences / More Sites drawer)
After using Sakai for several semesters, you may find that you have too many tabs displaying for course sites. This document will explain how to hide old course sites that you may not need to access on a regular basis.

Assign TA to Course Site
Teaching Assistants should be assigned the Teaching Assistant role within the course site. Assigning TAs as Instructors may be a FERPA violation. Adding a TA to a section they are not working with may also be a FERPA violation. Consult with your department if you have any questions regarding appropriate access.

Add Guest to Course Site (See Sakai Policies)
You can add non-WFU users to your site by going to Site Info, Add Participants, Add Non-official Participants. Simply type the e-mail address for the person you would like to add to your site in the text box. You may add more than one non-WFU participant in this box as long as each e-mail address is on a separate line. Make sure to check the option to have Sakai send an email notification to the person you are adding to the site. Sakai will send an e-mail to these non-official participants providing a password for the user to access Sakai. If the non-WFU participant does not receive an email from Sakai with a password, please contact The Bridge. It is possible that this person already has an account in Sakai.
